Rigsbanken was created by royal decree in January 1813, explicitly to absorb the catastrophic debts of the collapsing Kurantbank — itself a casualty of the Napoleonic Wars, the British bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807, and the subsequent loss of Danish naval power and trade. The new bank issued its notes against a forced loan levied on property owners across the kingdom, an arrangement deeply unpopular and only marginally effective at restoring public confidence in paper currency.
The 100 Rigsbankdaler was the highest denomination in the inaugural series. Within three years, exchange rates against silver had deteriorated so severely that the notes traded at a fraction of face value, setting the stage for the 1818 reform that replaced Rigsbanken with Nationalbanken.
