Bank Melli Iran was established in 1927 partly to displace the British-controlled Imperial Bank of Persia, which had held note-issuing rights since 1889. The decision to contract Thomas De La Rue for these notes carried an unavoidable irony: asserting Iranian financial independence through a London printer already supplying banknotes to half the British Empire.
The P#36A series spans the years immediately before and during the Allied occupation of Iran, which began in August 1941 when British and Soviet forces entered the country and forced Reza Shah's abdication. Notes issued after September 1941 technically bear the portrait of a ruler already in exile in South Africa.
