| 正面描述 | Bare-headed bust of Queen Maria II facing left, her hair elaborately dressed with a jewelled diadem and gathered in a chignon at the nape, with small curls framing the neck. The engraver's initials appear discreetly below the truncation. The circular legend reads MARIA·II·PORTUG:ET·ALGARB·REGINA, with the date 1853 positioned in the lower field flanked by two pellets. A fine beaded border runs along the outer rim. |

Maria II died in November 1853, making this one of the final issues of her reign — she collapsed and died during her sixteenth childbirth at age 34. Portuguese silver coinage of this period was struck at the Lisbon mint under chronic fiscal pressure, as the liberal constitutional governments of the 1840s and early 1850s repeatedly struggled to stabilize currency against depreciated copper and a restless monetary system inherited from the civil war between Miguelists and Constitutionalists that had ended only in 1834.
