| Obverse description | The obverse displays the rectangular crowned countermark '100', applied by royal decree of João IV in 1642, struck over an earlier LXXX Réis hammered silver coin. The host coin — issued either under João III or Filipe I — retains its original design elements in the field: the crowned royal arms with the denomination LXXX rendered in Roman numerals, partially visible beneath the countermark. A beaded border encircles the host coin's design. The countermark itself is punch-applied and appears in a recessed cartouche, indicating a revaluation from 80 to 100 Réis. The overall surface is irregular and shows typical characteristics of hammered coinage. |
