The Tesouro do Estado de Alagoas issued this note under the broader authority granted to Brazilian states during the early republican period, when the federal government temporarily permitted regional treasuries to emit their own paper currency to address chronic coin shortages. Alagoas was among the smaller northeastern states to exercise this right, and its issues were correspondingly limited in scope and volume.
State treasury emissions from this period were rarely redeemed systematically, and many simply fell out of use as federal consolidation progressed through the late 1890s. Pick records only a handful of Alagoas types, making any survivor from this issuer genuinely uncommon.
