The Banco de Guatemala was only established in 1946, replacing the earlier Banco Central de Guatemala as part of a broader set of financial reforms pushed through under Arévalo's reformist government. This note belongs to the bank's very first series of high-denomination issues — the institution was barely two years old when these 100 Quetzales began circulating.
At 100 Quetzales, this was the largest denomination in the inaugural series, and at a time when the quetzal held rough parity with the US dollar, that was serious purchasing power. ABNC produced the plates in New York under their standard contract arrangements with Central American central banks throughout the postwar decade.
