The University of San Carlos de Borromeo in Antigua, founded in 1676, occupies the central vignette, surrounded by Mayan glyphic writings and ornamental border elements drawn from pre-Columbian iconography. A Mayan deity sculpture is incorporated as a see-through registration device aligned between obverse and reverse. The denomination and founding legend of the university appear in the lower inscription panel. |
