Northern Bank's £100 note had a short window of relevance before becoming infamous. In December 2004, the Northern Bank's Belfast headquarters was the target of one of the largest cash robberies in British history — approximately £26.5 million taken. A significant portion of the stolen notes were Northern Bank issue, which prompted the bank to take the extraordinary step of withdrawing and reissuing its entire note series with new designs and serial prefixes, rendering the old stock worthless to the thieves and effectively demonetizing it overnight.
Pre-2004 Northern Bank £100 notes retain collector interest precisely because of that decision.
