The "Khedive's Cairo" designation refers to the urban grid laid out under Khedive Ismail in the late 1860s, a deliberate attempt to remake central Cairo along Haussmann-influenced lines in time for the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Ismail reportedly spent Egypt into near-bankruptcy funding that transformation, a debt spiral that contributed directly to British intervention and the effective end of autonomous Egyptian rule by 1882.
