The Yale of Beaufort is one of the Queen's Beasts series heraldic supporters, drawn from the ten creatures that flanked the temporary annexe at Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation. This 2023 issue arrived in the first full year of posthumous Royal Mint production under Charles III's authority, making the continued use of Elizabeth II's effigy a deliberate archival decision rather than a design oversight — the Mint issued explicit guidance that existing Elizabeth II bullion designs would remain current through transition coinage.
The yale itself is an obscure medieval heraldic beast, associated with the Beaufort family through John, Duke of Somerset, and carries the unusual attributed ability to swivel its horns independently in combat.
