The Yale of Beaufort is one of the ten heraldic beasts drawn from the Queen's Beasts series, itself derived from the carved stone figures that flanked the entrance to Westminster Abbey during Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation. The yale — a mythical creature with swiveling horns, associated with the Beaufort family and inherited through the Tudor line — had relatively little heraldic exposure before Arnold Machin and James Woodford's mid-century revival brought the full set to public attention.
This 2023 issue is posthumous, struck after Elizabeth II's death in September 2022. The effigy used is the fifth and final portrait by Jody Clark, introduced in 2015.
