This coin was issued as part of the Royal Mint's series commemorating figures of world historical significance — a program that has drawn periodic criticism for lionizing non-British subjects on British currency. Gandhi's inclusion is pointed given his role in dismantling the very empire whose monarch appears on the obverse.
