Elaborate Gothic filigree ornamentation fills the spandrels between the quarters, echoing the decorative vocabulary of Victorian Gothic Revival coinage. The shield is surmounted by an imperial crown. The surrounding legend in Gothic blackletter script reads 'TUEATUR UNITA DEUS' above and 'ANNO DOM MDCCCXLVII' below, all within a beaded inner border with trefoil ornaments. |
