The Dambusters raid of May 1943 — Operation Chastise — was conceived around Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb, a weapon specifically engineered to skip across reservoir surfaces and detonate against dam walls at depth. 617 Squadron lost eight of nineteen aircraft that night, and Guy Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross the following morning.
