Additional information

The Dambusters raid of May 1943 — Operation Chastise — was conceived around Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb, a weapon specifically engineered to skip across reservoir surfaces and detonate against dam walls at depth. 617 Squadron lost eight of nineteen aircraft that night, and Guy Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross the following morning. The tactical results were debated almost immediately: the Möhne and Eder dams were breached, but the Sorpe, arguably the most strategically significant, held.

Alderney has issued commemoratives under Crown dependency authority since the 1990s, with gold strikes typically produced by the Pobjoy Mint to proof standard.
