The Britannia gold coin series launched in 1987 as Britain's answer to the Krugerrand and the American Gold Eagle — a sovereign bullion offering with legal tender status. The 22-carat standard used here, rather than the .9999 fineness adopted later in 2013, was a deliberate choice to produce a harder-wearing coin more resistant to handling damage in circulation and trade. The silver content in the alloy gives these early Britannias a slightly warmer color than their purer successors.
Dora de Pedery-Hunt's effigy of Elizabeth II, introduced in 1985, appears on this issue — the third of five official portraits used during her reign.
