| Reverse description | A faithful high-relief reproduction of William Wyon's celebrated Una and the Lion design, first engraved for the 1839 Pattern Five Pounds of Queen Victoria. Una, personifying Britannia or the ideal of queenly virtue, is depicted as a gracefully draped standing female figure, her gown rendered in flowing classical drapework, resting her left hand upon the mane of a large lion at her side while holding a sceptre in her right hand. The lion strides forward to the left, its magnificent mane executed in exceptional sculptural detail. The Latin motto DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS (May God direct my steps) arcs across the upper field, and the Roman numeral date MDCCCXXXIX (1839) appears in the lower exergue, referencing the original issue year. The engraver's signature W. WYON R.A. is inscribed below the exergue line, and the initials JC appear at lower left near the base of the design. |
