The peripheral legend reads CHARLES III·D·G·REX·F·D·100 POUNDS·2025, arranged continuously around the rim in incuse Roman lettering. The denomination 100 POUNDS and date 2025 appear in the lower arc of the legend, while the engraver's initials MJ are discretely placed at the lower right of the portrait. The engagements at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, were triggered in part by a British attempt to seize a colonial arms cache — an operation ordered from London that went catastrophically wrong within hours. The decision to march on Concord was General Thomas Gage's, and its failure effectively ended any realistic hope of suppressing the rebellion by force before it spread beyond Massachusetts.
There is a certain irony in the Royal Mint commemorating a battle that began the process of stripping the Crown of its largest colonial territory.
