The St George and the Dragon design used on British gold coinage descends directly from Benedetto Pistrucci's original 1817 model, which he carved after studying a Roman cameo in the British Museum. Pistrucci himself was never permitted to engrave the master die — as a foreigner, guild rules barred him from that final step — so his model was transferred by other hands, introducing small variations that have fascinated specialists ever since.
The 2025 issue marks the first full sovereign-series year under Charles III, whose effigy appears on the obverse by Martin Jennings.
