Obverse description Uncrowned, draped effigy of King Charles III facing left, modelled by engraver Martin Jennings, occupying the central field against a finely engine-turned guilloche background. The legend arcs around the periphery, reading CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS, with the engraver's initials MJ discreetly placed below the truncation. The portrait is rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail to the hair and facial features.

Additional information

The Royal Arms design used on British gold bullion has carried legal tender face values since the Sovereign series was restructured for modern bullion coinage — a formality that matters little commercially but preserves the coin's status under UK tax law as exempt from Capital Gains Tax. The accession of Charles III required a complete re-engraving of the obverse effigy, with the new portrait by sculptor Martin Jennings entering circulation on British coinage in 2023.
