The Royal Arms design used on British gold bullion has carried legal tender face values since the Sovereign series was restructured for modern bullion coinage — a formality that matters little commercially but preserves the coin's status under UK tax law as exempt from Capital Gains Tax. The accession of Charles III required a complete re-engraving of the obverse effigy, with the new portrait by sculptor Martin Jennings entering circulation on British coinage in 2023.
