The Isle of Man has long operated as an unusually autonomous issuing authority, striking commemorative coinage under its own treasury rather than through the Royal Mint — a privilege rooted in the island's status as a Crown dependency with its own parliament, Tynwald, claimed to be among the oldest continuous parliaments in the world.
