The Normandy landings of June 1944 required the largest amphibious assault ever assembled — nearly 7,000 vessels and 160,000 troops crossing the Channel on D-Day alone. Pitcairn Islands, a British Overseas Territory with a permanent population numbering in the dozens, issues commemoratives under royal authority but has no meaningful circulation economy of its own. Coins bearing its name are produced exclusively for the collector market.
Charles III acceded following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, making this among the earlier struck commemoratives to carry his effigy on a Pitcairn issue.
