The University of the Philippines centennial commemorative was issued in 1983 under the Marcos administration — a politically awkward moment to celebrate an institution that had become one of the more vocal sources of student and faculty opposition to martial law, which had been declared eleven years earlier. The BSP proceeded regardless, part of a broader commemorative coin program that functioned partly as foreign exchange generation through collector sales rather than domestic circulation.
