The "Shell Oil" sobriquet attached to this note comes from a genuine error in the intaglio printing: a batch released into circulation showed a faint but unmistakable shell-like artifact in the background security printing, almost certainly caused by a damaged or contaminated plate segment at the BSP's Security Plant Complex. Filipino collectors seized on the name immediately, and despite being an unintentional variety, demand for clean examples with the flaw clearly visible has remained steady in the local market.
Pick 219 is a workhorse domestic issue, but the Shell Oil error gives this particular specimen its only real distinction.
