Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the October 1944 Leyte Gulf landings, during which General Douglas MacArthur waded ashore at Red Beach fulfilling his famous "I shall return" pledge made after the fall of Corregidor in 1942. The accompanying naval battle — fought across four separate engagements over three days — remains the largest naval battle in history by number of ships involved.
The .800 fineness is characteristic of BSP commemorative silver issues of this period, a step below sterling but consistent across the commemorative program of the early 1990s.
