Pio Valenzuela was the physician and Katipunan officer sent by Andrés Bonifacio to Dapitan in 1896 to recruit José Rizal into the armed revolution — a mission that failed when Rizal refused, arguing the country was not ready for revolt. That meeting, and Rizal's rejection of the Katipunan's plans, forced Bonifacio to move the uprising forward without the movement's most internationally recognized intellectual.
Nordic gold — the same copper-aluminum-zinc-tin alloy used in euro coins — was chosen for its resistance to corrosion in humid tropical climates, a persistent problem for Philippine circulation coinage.
