The abacá content in this note is a long-running Philippine policy choice, not a novelty — the BSP has blended locally grown abacá fiber into its banknote paper for decades, partly as a practical measure to support the domestic fiber industry and partly because abacá genuinely improves tensile strength and tear resistance in circulating currency. The Philippines remains the world's dominant abacá producer, so the material has both economic and supply-chain logic behind it.
The Security Plant Complex has printed Philippine currency in-house since 1978, one of the relatively few central banks in Southeast Asia to maintain fully sovereign production capacity. Watermark-only security on a note of this denomination is notably lean by current international standards.
