Stephan, Frölich & Klüpfel operated a coal mine in Scharley, Upper Silesia, and like many industrial concerns in the region issued their own token currency for use in the company store — a system that kept wages circulating within the enterprise rather than bleeding into the local economy. This zinc piece belongs to that tradition of privately-issued notgeld common among Silesian mining operations, where geographic isolation and corporate paternalism made captive currency practical.
