Neumarkt in Schlesien — now Środa Śląska in Poland — was one of hundreds of small Silesian municipalities that issued Notgeld during the inflationary spiral of the early Weimar years. The Städtische Sparkasse, the municipal savings bank, rather than a private issuer, put out this 100 Pfennig piece as local purchasing power evaporated and small-denomination Reichsmark coinage disappeared from circulation entirely through hoarding.
Grass, Barth & Comp. W. Friedrich in Breslau was the dominant regional printer for Silesian Notgeld, handling dozens of municipal contracts simultaneously during this period.
