Lohengau was the medieval name for the district around Soltau, revived by local cultural nationalists in the early twentieth century as part of the broader Heimat movement — that peculiarly German fusion of regional pride, folk antiquarianism, and, by 1921, anti-inflation anxiety. The Heimatbund Lohengau was one of hundreds of civic associations that stepped into the monetary vacuum left by the Reichsbank's inability to keep small change in circulation during the postwar inflation spiral.
The Westholsteinische Bank's Soltau branch handled printing, which was unusual — most Notgeld of this type was farmed out to specialist lithographers. Local production kept costs down but also meant inconsistent registration across the series.
