Eschweiler's 1916 zinc notgeld was a direct consequence of the Imperial German government's wartime requisition of copper and nickel for munitions, which gutted the Reichsbank's ability to supply subsidiary coinage to municipalities. Hundreds of German cities issued their own emergency pieces that year, but Eschweiler's zinc striking is documented under at least two die varieties — the Funck 122.2 reference distinguishes it from the .1 variant by spacing or font details in the inscription.
