John Paul II's 1979 Caribbean tour — his first papal foreign trip after taking the throne in October 1978 — included a stop in the Dominican Republic in late January, making this one of the earliest commemorative issues struck in his honor anywhere in the world. The Dominican Republic moved quickly; the coin was authorized and produced within months of the visit itself.
