| 裏面の説明 | The right-facing bust of Pope John Paul II dominates the right portion of the field, rendered in finely detailed high relief and depicting the pontiff in papal vestments with a pectoral cross suspended from his neck. To the left, a detailed architectural rendering of the Cathedral of Havana (Catedral de La Habana) is shown in elevation, faithfully reproducing its characteristic Baroque facade with twin bell towers. The curved legend VISITA DE SU SANTIDAD JUAN PABLO II arcs along the upper periphery, followed by the dates 21-25 de Enero de 1998 in a secondary arc. The inscription CATEDRAL DE LA HABANA appears in the lower left field, the date 1998 is engraved at the base center, and the mint mark of the Empresa Cubana de Acuñaciones appears below the date. |

John Paul II's visit to Cuba in January 1998 was the first papal visit to the island and required years of quiet negotiation between the Vatican and the Castro government. Cuba had been constitutionally atheist since 1962; the state amended that designation to "secular" in 1992, partly clearing the way for the visit. The trip drew enormous crowds and prompted Castro to declare Christmas a public holiday for the first time in thirty years.
Cuba issued several commemorative gold and silver pieces tied to the visit. The Frasca reference Fr#92a distinguishes this specific gold issue within what became a crowded commemorative series.
