The "Vale del Tesoro" series was a stopgap measure issued directly by the Treasury rather than through the Banco de Chile or any commercial bank, sidestepping the normal note-issuing apparatus entirely. Chile's monetary system in the early 1920s was badly strained — the country had been off the gold standard since 1898 and the peso had been depreciating steadily, forcing ad hoc fiscal instruments like this one into everyday circulation.
Printing by the Imprenta Fiscal kept production costs under state control, but also meant quality control was inconsistent across the run. The 1921–1924 date range reflects a span of authorized issues rather than a single print run.
