Part of Mexico's long-running "Pre-Hispanic Cultures" bimetallic series, this issue honors Tlaxcala — the confederation of city-states that famously allied with Hernán Cortés against the Aztec Triple Alliance in 1519. That alliance remains one of the most consequential and debated decisions in Mesoamerican history, and Tlaxcala's role was formally recognized when it was granted special privileges by the Spanish Crown that exempted its citizens from certain colonial tribute obligations for generations.
The Casa de Moneda de México produced these proof bimetallics in strictly limited quantities, with gold-in-silver pairings reserved for the premium tier of the series.
