Issued as part of Cuba's ongoing hard-currency program, this coin was sold abroad for foreign exchange at a time when the island's domestic economy had no legal gold coin circulation whatsoever. The 1988 date places it squarely in the period following the Rectification Process launched by Castro in 1986 — a campaign to reverse market-oriented reforms and reassert central planning, even as the Soviet subsidies underpinning the entire economy were quietly beginning to contract.
