Colombia issued this piece specifically for the 39th International Eucharistic Congress, held in Bogotá in August 1968 — the first time the congress had convened in South America. Pope Paul VI attended in person, the first papal visit to Latin America, arriving just weeks after the signing of the Medellín Conference documents that would shape liberation theology for decades.
Mintage was tightly controlled as a commemorative issue rather than a circulation strike, and surviving examples rarely show handling wear.
