The Dominican Republic issued its Human Rights gold coinage in 1983 to coincide with commemorative programming tied to international human rights observances. Trial pieces in aluminium were produced as die and design approval strikes before committing to the precious metal production run — a standard step in the Dominican mint's proofing process during this period, when the Casa de Moneda contracted significant commemorative work to foreign mints including the Franklin Mint.
