Piedfort coinage — struck at twice the standard planchet thickness — has roots in French medieval practice, where such pieces were produced as presentation gifts or official records of a design rather than for circulation. Cuba's adoption of the format in the late 1980s served an explicitly hard-currency function: these were collector issues engineered for export sale, generating foreign exchange at a moment when Soviet subsidies were beginning to contract ahead of the bloc's collapse.
The KM reference spanning three separate catalogue numbers reflects annual design changes within the series rather than a single continuous type.
