The "Homeland or Death" series to which this piece belongs was issued during one of Cuba's most economically desperate decades — the late 1980s, before Soviet subsidies collapsed entirely but well after the structural rot had set in. Gold commemoratives of this period were produced almost exclusively for hard currency export, sold through foreign dealers and at international coin fairs, since ordinary Cubans had no legal access to gold and no dollars to spend on it. The coins generated foreign exchange for a state that badly needed it.
The JMA reference range AAEE297–AAEE302 suggests at least six distinct issues within the series across the emission period, each with separate subject matter but sharing the same physical specifications.
