| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse is printed in dark brown and black on white paper, with the central panel bearing the bold inscription EL BANCO NACIONAL above the denomination CIEN PESOS FUERTES in large letterpress text. An oval vignette at upper centre displays the Argentine national coat of arms flanked by two serial number panels, while an intaglio portrait of a bearded male figure occupies the lower-left vignette and a second intaglio portrait of a uniformed gentleman appears at lower right. The date line reads Buenos Aires, Agosto 1o de 1873, and corner denominational numerals 100 appear within ornate guilloche rosettes at each corner. |

| Descrizione del rovescio | The reverse is printed in blue-green on white paper and centres on a large intaglio vignette of the Argentine national coat of arms — the oval seal with clasped hands beneath a liberty cap, encircled by a laurel wreath — surrounded by a radiating arrangement of provincial flags, each identified by a label with the name of an Argentine province. The denomination numeral 100 appears in large figures at top centre and again at the bottom, framed by ornate guilloche borders, with the word CIEN repeated in each of the four corners within decorative panels. |

The Banco Nacional of Argentina — not to be confused with the later Banco Nacional founded in 1872 under different legislation — issued this note during a period when Buenos Aires and the provincial banking interests were in perpetual tension over currency control. ABNC held the dominant position for South American bank printing through the 1870s, and the quality of their intaglio work on Argentine issues from this decade is noticeably higher than contemporaneous European-printed competitors.
PS#657 is a scarce catalogue entry, with very few confirmed surviving examples documented through major auction records. Whether that reflects low original print runs or high attrition during Argentina's financial crisis of 1874–1876 is not firmly established.
