100 Pesos Fuertes

The Banco Boliviano was one of several private commercial banks that emerged in Bolivia during the 1860s under legislation intended to stimulate trade finance in a country still heavily dependent on silver mining revenues. The Compañía Nacional de Billetes de Banco — the National Bank Note Company of New York — printed this note, the same firm responsible for much of Latin America's private bank paper during that decade before American Bank Note absorbed it in 1879.

The "Pesos Fuertes" denomination is significant: it anchored the note explicitly to hard silver rather than the depreciating moneda feble coinage that had plagued Bolivian commerce for years. Whether the bank actually maintained adequate specie reserves to back circulation at this level is another matter entirely.
