Cuba's 1989 commemorative program marking the 150th anniversary of the first Spanish railroad — which ran between Havana and Bejucal and predated any railway on the Iberian Peninsula itself — generated a number of pattern and trial pieces before final production decisions were made. This brass reverse trial is one of those intermediate strikes, produced by the Empresa Cubana de Acuñaciones to test die geometry or metal behavior prior to committing to the issued composition.
The Havana–Bejucal line opened in November 1837, financed largely by sugar interests who needed faster access to the port.
