Additional information

Issued to mark the run-up to the Quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 landfall, this piece is one of several large-format silver issues the Dominican Republic produced through the late 1980s and early 1990s as the 1992 commemorative market heated up across the Americas and Spain. The Banco Central was not alone — mints from the Bahamas to Mexico were positioning similar issues for the collector trade, knowing demand would peak around the anniversary year.

At 155.5 grams of .999 silver, these were sold primarily through international coin dealers and rarely, if ever, passed through domestic circulation.
