Part of the Casa de Moneda's ongoing series celebrating Mexico's individual states, this Coahuila issue belongs to a program launched in 2003 that ultimately produced proof bimetallic pieces for all 31 states plus the Federal District. Coahuila's particular historical weight in Mexican nation-building — it was briefly joined with Texas as a single state before 1836 — gave the mint substantial iconographic material to work with.
The .999 fineness on both metals is notably purer than the circulating bimetallic 100-peso coins of the same period, which used lower-grade alloys. Proof versions were struck in strictly limited quantities for collectors, with no intended circulation.
