The 100 Pesos bimetallic series, launched in 2003 and running through 2011, was issued to commemorate each of Mexico's 31 states plus the Federal District. Coahuila's entry appeared in 2006. Each coin in the series carried a silver center — genuine .925 — which made them unusual among circulation commemoratives worldwide and contributed to widespread hoarding the moment silver spot prices climbed.
Coahuila holds the distinction of being the only Mexican state to have declared its own independence before Mexico itself did, a fact that made selection of local imagery for this series politically charged in ways that numismatic literature rarely acknowledges.
