Camilo Cienfuegos, one of the central commanders of the Cuban Revolution, disappeared on October 28, 1959 — just months after Batista's fall — when his Cessna 310 vanished over the Florida Straits. No wreckage was ever recovered. The circumstances remain officially unexplained, and the timing, coming just days after Cienfuegos had personally escorted Huber Matos to custody following Matos's disputed resignation, has fueled speculation ever since.
This issue is part of a broader Cuban gold commemorative program from the late 1980s aimed at generating hard currency through numismatic exports, as the domestic economy had no meaningful civilian gold coin circulation.
