By 1896, the Banco Español de la Isla de Cuba was operating under severe strain — the Cuban War of Independence had been grinding since February 1895, and Spanish colonial finances were deteriorating rapidly. Notes of this series circulated alongside heavy military expenditure that Spain could not sustainably fund from the island's own revenues.
Bradbury Wilkinson's involvement was long-standing; the bank had used the New Malden firm for its higher denominations across multiple series. The 100 Peso face value placed this note at the top of everyday transactional use, making it a frequent instrument for large commercial settlements in Havana.
Spanish sovereignty over Cuba ended two years after this note's issue date.
