Banco de D. Matte y Cía. was one of several private Chilean banks empowered to issue notes under the 1860 Ley de Bancos, which allowed chartered institutions to circulate paper backed by metallic reserves deposited with the government. Domingo Matte's bank operated during the turbulent final decade of Chilean private banking — the 1898 Ley de Conversión effectively ended the era of competing private issues, consolidating circulation under state control.
ABNC handled numerous South American private bank commissions in this period, producing plates of consistent quality that outlasted many of the institutions that ordered them.
